This year was a busy and productive time for the KLT Resource Management Committee. Volunteer activities on the Alewive Preserve allowed us to complete the first phase of the selective cutting of the 25-acre red pine plantation. The cut focused around several large oak stands growing within the red pine. Clearing around the oak will increase sunlight and growth potential of the oak and subsequently enhance the long-term diversity in the woods preserve. The products of the selective cut were poles and toppings. The poles will be used for trail signage and property delineation, while the toppings will be chipped for trail maintenance. Special efforts were made by Chuck Clark, George Kahl, Bob Butler, Bob Dyer and the Kennebunk Fish and Game Club.

On May 6, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, with the help of Chuck Clark, stocked 200 brook trout in Alewive Pond. This is the first time Alewive Pond has been stocked by the State. Recent information from local fishermen suggests that Alewive was originally a trout fishery until bass were introduced. On a recent walk-about, I noticed signs of fishing activity from the banks of the Preserve. "The word is out!"

Much work done, much to do! The Resource Management Committee's new agenda includes plans for continued preserve and trail management. Anyone interested in sharpening woods skills should contact Committee members: Chuck Clark, George Kahl, Betsy Stevens or Tim Spahr. Or contact the KLT Office at 985-8734.
